Investment Theme for 2021

In 2020 we saw decoupling of ground realities and stock markets. The reason is due to government monetary policies which were very accommodative and most countries responded with massive deficit spending to overcome the shocks to economy due to virus. We know that stock markets are forward looking which means investors have a great deal of optimism in future economy. In 2021 we can expect the interest rates to remain historically low and continued support from government in form of stimulus. With historically high cash balances and very low interest rates in bond markets – risk assets like stocks are still best haven to park money. There are two key factors in 2021 when it comes to US. First is the effectiveness of the vaccine for COVID-19 and further spread of the virus. Second prospect is the partisan control of US Senate. If both executive and legislative branches of US government are held by same party then markets can expect long pending reforms in infrastructure, immigration, education, healthcare and other critical aspects. Reform doesn’t actually have to happen, only the possibility of ‘reforms’ are enough to spark bullish sentiment. If both factors lead to favorable outcomes then the stock market gains will be further amplified. Divided government hinders progress, lowers business sentiment and confidence which eventually work against the economy in long run.

Irrespective of the outcomes of election or the virus – we should expect continued gains in stock markets mainly due to accommodative monetary policy by FED. In light of this I am going to go long on US based large cap ETFs. I am particularly fascinated by ARKW and IPO.

Data Center Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) seem to be a very good sector to be in given that data center spending across the world will keep increasing. I can’t find a good ETF for this sector so I recommend companies like CONE, DLR or COR

I also prefer ‘Consumer Staples’ sector for 2021. Consider VDC or KXI.

I am going to be adding a small exposure to crypto currencies in my portfolio in 2021. I am staying away from commodities, currencies and small caps this year.

This year too I am suggesting to ensure maximum possible contributions to 401k, HSA, Roth IRA, Traditional IRA and 529 accounts.

Global Warming: A Modern Myth

‘Global Warming’ has been a buzzword in political circles in this decade. The western world continues to churn out ‘doomsday prophecies’ of the world coming to an end if nothing is done to contain the greenhouse gases in atmosphere. Most of the western media claims of a consensus among climate scientists that the earth is heating up due to increase in carbon emissions caused by human activity. According to them rising temperatures of our planet will lead to dramatic rise in sea levels, floods, wide spread droughts, intense heat waves, powerful storms, etc. The very concept of ‘warming earth’ is flawed since genuine data suggests that earth temperatures are falling rather than rising. Greenhouse gases are composed of water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone and CFCs. Water vapor has more than 70 % contribution to greenhouse gases. The world is currently focused on carbon dioxide with actually constitutes less than 10 % and out of that less than 2 % is due to man-made causes. The ...

Investment Theme for 2025

Reflecting on 2024 As 2024 ends, the S&P 500 wraps up another stellar year with a bumper yield of 25%. Markets have demonstrated remarkable resilience, thriving amid global upheaval and chaos. While Big Tech dominated business headlines throughout the year, opportunities extended far beyond the tech giants. The best-performing stock of 2024? Surprisingly, it’s not Nvidia—despite its prominence, it ranks only 23rd on the list. Table 1: Tickers with appreciation % in 2024 From a historical perspective, the market has delivered positive returns in 8 of the past 10 years, with only two instances of negative performance. This underscores the importance of adopting a strategic , long-term approach to investing, rather than a tactical , short-term mindset. Table 2: S& P 500 % returns by year Looking forward to 2025 FED interest rates The monetary easing cycle is expected to extend into 2025, with the Federal Reserve and many other central banks globally continuing to cut...

Rise and Fall of the Tamil Kingdom

Three decades old military conflict precipitated on May 16, 2009 when the exuberant Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared unanimous victory over the LTTE rebels. After the civil war officially ended this day, the status quo in Northern Sri Lanka continues to be quite disturbing with thousands of Tamil civilians being driven shelter less and forced to survive in filthy conditions. A ruthless secessionist campaign led by the elusive warrior Velupillai Prabhakaran will leave indelible stories in the pages of history of island nation of Sri Lanka . LTTE was a saga of longest armed resistance thriving since 1976 against a democratic nation in entire Asia . The Tamil community in Sri Lanka is suffering from discrimination in all aspects from the majority Sinhalese since ages. The majority Buddhist population of Sri Lanka never acknowledged ‘Tamil’ identity. Sinhalese schools do not teach Tamil and Sri Lanka recognizes only Sinhala as their official language in spite of...
